THE COST OF MAINTAINING a factory team has been sighted as
one of the principal reasons for their withdrawal and in so doing it has opened
the way up for the privateer teams to have a really good crack at landing the
title. This could be just what the sport needed. Teams competing on a limited
budget helping to make the sport more affordable to all, a throw back to those
good old days of pals pulling together to beat the odds. Without many of the
manufacturers directly involved - Skoda will be supplying the Austrian based
Red Bull team - the privateers have a window of opportunity that is unlikely to
open again.
